In the fall of 2024, a homeowner in Elkhart, Indiana asked B&E Home Renovations to turn a dated, carpeted bathroom into a fully modern one. We removed the corner tub and the old standing shower, built an open concept tiled shower, turned the old shower space into a closet, brought the plumbing and electrical up to date, and waterproofed the entire room. The job took 11 days.

Before: carpet, a corner tub and a standing shower
The old bathroom had carpet on the floor, a corner tub, a separate standing shower and an oak vanity. The homeowner wanted a heavily updated, modern bathroom.
The new shower
- Removed the corner tub and routed new supply lines and a new main drain
- Built an open concept shower with a partition wall
- Built a custom shower bench, fully tiled
- Tiled every wall to the ceiling with light gray 24 by 48 inch large format tile and white grout
- Installed a 32 inch linear drain with a custom tile top plate, so the drain blends into the floor
A new closet where the old shower stood
We took out the old standing shower, capped the lines, framed the space, hung and finished drywall and turned it into a closet with a sliding mirror door. We painted the whole room to finish it off.
Floors, vanities and finishing touches
- Tiled the entire floor with special order pearl white fish scale tile, a detailed pattern that takes expert level tile work
- Installed two vanities with sinks and white quartz tops
- Installed two vanity lights
- Installed a new toilet and flange
- Installed a bathroom vent
- Added PVC crown molding
- Hung a barn door at the bathroom entrance
Updating the plumbing and electrical
The existing plumbing and electrical were dated. Rather than connect new fixtures to old systems, we ran new supply lines and a new main drain, routed new electrical for the light switches, and added two GFCI outlets.
A fully waterproof bathroom
We installed Schluter waterproofing membrane under the tile through the entire bathroom, including the new closet. With the membrane under every tiled surface, the whole room is waterproof, not just the shower.
